The History of Camisoles

The History of Camisoles

Believe it or not, that camisole you are wearing has quite the history. Modern-day camisoles come from the historic chemise. Let’s take a closer look into the history of camisoles.

Chemises were originally worn by both men and woman. The “ancient” chemises were more specifically used as undergarments, worn always under the primary set of clothing. As the fashion world changed from medieval times, so did the chemise.

During the Renaissance period, the corset became a fashion “must-have.” The first corsets were worn under the chemise. It was only a matter of time, however, that the fashion industry (even then) began looking for a new solution to the chemise. Afterall, the corset became more elaborate and ornate. The long, thin chemise was not hiding the corset well, so a solution needed to be found.

The solution came during the Victorian era. It was the camisole. Can you believe that the camisole dates back to the Victorian period? Camisoles solved the chemise dilemma. Instead of being long and bulky, the camisole was light and short. Woman soon discovered that they could effectively hid their corsets without also adding weight: the chemise. Camisoles hid the corset well and also kept the illusion of being “thin.” Camisoles soon joined chemises in the fashion “must-have” category. Since panties had not yet been designed, both the camisole and chemises were used as undergarments.

Corsets were not used as widely during the turn of the 20th century, due to rising health concerns. Similarly, women began to enjoy athletics during this time. Thus, bloomers were designed to appeal to the athletic, yet still feminine, woman. “Teddies” became extremely popular because it combined the camisole and bloomers, attached into one piece.

It wasn’t until the 1920s that the teddy became divided into two pieces. Designers began experimenting with teddies… making them “sexier” (shorter, tighter, etc). The 1920’s era marked the beginning of modern-day camisole sets.

Since the 1920’s, the camisole has been taken from being an undergarment to being both an undergarment and outer garment. Camisoles are one of the most widely used staple wardrobe item among women of all ages and backgrounds. Truly, the camisole has come a long way since its origination during the medieval times and clearly defines femininity.…

Made in China – Designer Handbag Fashion Totally Misunderstood

Made in China – Designer Handbag Fashion Totally Misunderstood

Wow! What’s all this garble about “everything” made in China being counterfeit or fake? Do people understand the design and manufacturing process? Or, are they just determined to squabble about one of the manufacturing industry’s greatest resources?

True, there’s been a lot of media about children’s toys being manufactured poorly. Shame on China for the mess they’ve created. They’ll fix the problem, or they’ll lose business. We all learn from our mistakes, right? Or, at least the smart folks learn. And, let’s face it, China is no dummy!

China has been manufacturing most of the clothing, shoes, handbags, and accessories stocked in all the major department stores throughout the world for many, many years. And, this is not going to fade or go away. China offers low-cost labor for low-end to high-end designer handbags, clothing and just about anything around the house.

Most people don’t understand the truth about the Made in China label. China has been producing most of the Designer Merchandise sold in the USA for very long time. Why? Because the price to manufacture in China keeps prices as low as possible for consumers. People complain about the high price tags on designer handbags, clothing, shoes, and accessories. If the same item made in China was made in the USA or Europe the prices would be doubled or tripled.

If the Hermes Birkin bag was assembled by hand in China instead of France, the price would not be $7,000.00 each. If Italian leather was sent to China for the assembly of Prada handbags, the prices would not be $3,000.00 each. Please put things into perspective.

Burberry’s new management decided to use China for some of its assembled manufacturing needs and people went crazy. The thought of using a designer handbag made in China is misunderstood, misinterpreted, and misguided. The product made in China consists of the same quality of fabric as if it were made in the USA, France, England or Italy. The only difference is the designer item was assembled in China, or any other country offering a cheaper assembly manufacturing process.

Most of the high-end Designers buy fabrics, leathers, and materials from the USA or Europe, pay a premium price for the high-quality fabrication, and then negotiate manufacturing in China. The materials and specifications are sent to China and made. Representatives from each of the Design Houses travel to China or other manufacturing countries to supervise the process. The finished products are shipped to the USA and other parts of the world for sale. It’s a process kept sweet and as simple as possible. It creates jobs and produces a global economy.

Most consumers don’t know the designer manufacturing process or understand the details. They see a Made in China label and assume it’s a counterfeit item or fake. In reality, it’s not. It’s a moderately priced item made in a country which has been stereo-typed. And, we can’t blame the consumer because most of the junk, counterfeit and fake merchandise bearing the trademarks of …

The Problem with Men’s Fashion

The Problem with Men’s Fashion

When it comes to fashion, there are many facets, like those of a glimmering gemstone, to this school of thought. And, it is , believe it or not, a school of thought. On a technical level, fashion is actually a subset of the branch of philosophy known as aesthetics, the study of what we find appealing and why. And, much like philosophy, fashion is something that you interact with on a daily basis, whether you know it or not, and whether or not you care. Fashion is everywhere, and it belongs to everyone. There’s a misconception out there that you can’t be the kind of person who frequents Autozone and still like fashion. In other words, many of us erroneously think that fashion is exclusively for women. (And, for that matter, that being into cars is solely for men.) Men are implicitly taught by society to disregard and reject fashion, and that’s a tragedy, because those of us who are interested in fashion are kind of left high and dry due to the lack of interest creating a lack of options. As for myself, I’ve been wearing the occasional women’s clothing since I was a teenager trying to create a style for myself in the form of long, red overcoats and yoga pants. There was even a brief affair with chokers and fishnet gloves in my teenage years. However, there’s not a lot a man can do with regards to fashion. The apex of men’s fashion is the suit, which is also a “uniform” of sorts for professionals, so that’s unfortunate.

The good news is that the trend of men being pushed away from an interest in fashion is quickly changing, and it’s about time. Today, society is being forced to be more accepting of those who “violate” the “rules” of society in one way or another, and so we can have men who express emotion, who have an interest in “feminine” things like caring about their looks and an interest in fashion. Likewise, the walls are coming down in regards to what women are “allowed” to be interested in. It’s truly a great time to be alive in that regard, at least. Now, if we give a few decades, men’s fashion will have some options worth writing home about, In the meantime, I’m going to continue wearing the bright read women’s overcoat an ex girlfriend’s aunt gave me when I was in high school and look like an anime character.
